Insomnia is characterised by by repeated difficulty with sleep initiation, duration, consolidation and quality that occurs despite adequate time and opportunity for sleep .Insomnia is acute if symptoms occur for less than 1 month and chronic if symptoms occur for greater than a month.
Diagnosis is determined by clinical evaluation by a sleep physician. Sleep diaries and/or actigraphy are often used to assess insomnia and evaluate the effects of treatment.
