Why have a portable home based sleep study?
Home based sleep studies can be an effective way to diagnose obstructive sleep apnoea and other sleep disorders. For many patients, sleep testing in the comfort of the home is clinically appropriate and more convenient than undergoing an inpatient sleep study. Additionally, a home based sleep study may be the most affordable option for some patients. The same amount of data is collected (with the exception of audio-video recording) and the same amount of time is spent analysing the data. The primary difference between a home based sleep study and a laboratory study is that the home based sleep study is not supervised by a sleep technologist.
What is involved?
On the evening of the sleep study the patient will attend the clinic for a 45 minute appointment, during which a sleep technician will apply a number of sensors designed to monitor important physiological parameters during sleep.
As part of the application the technician will apply small metal cups (electrodes) with adhesive paste to the head and face to monitor brain activity and assess sleep state. Flexible bands are also placed around the chest and abdomen to measure breathing effort. Other sensors are placed on the legs, chin, neck, and finger to measure leg movements, airflow, snoring, and oxygen level respectively. The sensors relay data to a small recording device worn on the chest. This is a non-invasive study, does not cause pain and is designed to be as comfortable as possible.
Once all equipment is attached the patient is able to walk, move freely, drive home, and go about his or her normal evening routine. In the morning, the sensors may be easily removed by the patient and the equipment is returned to Perth Respiratory and Sleep Clinic site.
Immediate appointments are available.
Home Based sleep studies are available at the Mount and at Murdoch.
