A Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT) is conducted during the day to assess your level of daytime sleepiness. It is typically conducted the day after a laboratory supervised sleep study to rule out nocturnal causes of excessive daytime sleepiness.
An MSLT is primarily used to diagnose narcolepsy. Narcolepsy is a neurological sleep disorder characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness and uncontrollable urges to sleep during the day.
The MSLT consists of a series of short nap opportunities occurring at timed intervals throughout the day. The types and stages of sleep observed during this study will help the doctor diagnose sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, idiopathic hypersomnia and other sleep disorders that cause daytime tiredness.
An MSLT takes place over the course of a full day. This is because your ability to fall asleep varies throughout the day.
