Maintenance of Wakefulness Test

A Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT) is conducted during the day to assess your ability to stay awake and alert. It is typically conducted the day after a laboratory supervised sleep study to assess any nocturnal causes of excessive daytime sleepiness.

An MWT is primarily used to determine whether your ability maintain wakefulness presents a public or personal safety concern. An MWT may also be used to assess the individual effectiveness of therapy plans for the treatment of narcolepsy and excessive daytime sleepiness.

The MWT consists of a series of wakefulness trials, during which a patient must attempt to maintain wakefulness in a low stimulation environment.

An MWT takes place over the course of a full day. This is because your ability to fall asleep varies throughout the day.
